Genealogy of Robert(Bob)Ethington Newton

Mrs. Iola Franklin Newton, 80, died last Saturday after a long illness. She was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arther P. Smith, and Mr. Smith, at the time of her death. Mrs. Newton was a native of Butler county, and was born in the Franklin community, near Halso Mill. Since the death of her husband, Robert E. Newton, fourteen years ago, she had made her home with her children, residing with the sons and daughters for long visits. She was welcomed in each home, where she was beloved as only a kind and indulgent parent is loved. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ralph E. Smith, Brewton; Mrs. T. C. Heath, Ashville, Ala.; Mrs. A. P. Smith, Pigeon Creek and Mrs. James E. Grayson, Greenville; five sons, G. D. Newton, Montgomery; W. R. W. R. Scott, C. D. and Arthur Newton, Greenville; 42 grand children and 30 great grand children, a total of 81 direct descendants. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Joe Armstrong, Greenville; Mrs. Jennie Armstrong, Bluff Springs, Fla., and Mrs. Mattie Taylor, Pensacola, Fla. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Mt. Carmel, in the same community in which Mrs. Newton was born and in which she spent many years of her life. Rev. Ralph Mullins and Rev. M. C. Griffin were the officiating ministers. Burial was in the church cemetery, with Dunklin Funeral Home directing.

Johnnie Webb Newton, five month old son of Sgt. 1st Class and Mrs. Richard B. Newton, of Greenville, died early Friday morning at the home of his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Chesser, in Red Level. The baby had been ill for some time, and had been under care of physicians and specialists here and in Montgomery, New Orleans, and other cities. All possible was done to restore his health. His father, Sgt. Newton, is a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 866th Engineer Aviation Battalion, which left Greenville last Wednesday for Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He was given a leave to remain with his family on accont of the illness of the baby son. Surviving are the parents; one brother, Richard B. Newton, Jr.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Newton, Greenville, and Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Chesser, Red Level; great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. K. L. Sweatt, Red Level, and Mrs. Ola Newton, Greenville. Funeral services were conducted at ten o'clock Saturday morning from Ebenezer Church, with Rev. Ralph Mullins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Dunklin Funeral Home directing.

Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Newton announce the marriage of their daughter, Clodine, to Charles A. Ponder, of Laurel, Miss. The wedding took place Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at teh home of Rev. RalphMullins. The attractive bride wore a white dress. Only members of the immediate families were present. Mr. and Mrs. Ponder left Sunday night for Laurel, Miss., where they will reside with his parents. Mr. Ponder has just received a discharge from the Navy, and will take a position in Laurel.

Cpl. James Edgar Newton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Newton, Greenville, is a Military Policeman assigned to Mallard Field, Dakar, in the North African Division of the Air Transport Command. Mallard Field, Dakar, is on French West Africa's western bulge. This jumping off base of the North African Division's 1618 mile flight to South America is a vital link in the Green Project. To meet the needs of the Redeployment Plan, for which the Green Project is designed, Mallard Field is shuttling combat troops from Europe to the U.S. and Asia. Upon beginning his recent assignment, he was prepared for his duties by previous experience as an M.P. at Stuttgart AAB, Stuttgart, Ark. Overseas nine months, he has visited Algiers, Oran, Casablanca, and Marrakech. Situated within a 20 minutes drive of Dakar, he has visited the quaint seaport capital of French colonial Senegal. Corporal Newton's wife, Elna Faulkner (Newton), and his 2.5 year-old daughter, Gloria Jean, are living at the home of her parents, 204 Olive St., Montgomery.
