Elbert Hugh Newton, 70, a resident of 311 South Pine Street, Greenville,died Friday, August 10th. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, from the Chapel of Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Mullins officiating. Burial was in the Sardis Cemetery, with Jones Funeral Home directing. Survivors include whis widow, Mrs. Lola Mae Newton, Greenville; one daughter, Mrs. DeMaris Sexton, Montgomery; one son, Charles A. Newton, Letohatchee; three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Lee Little, Mrs. Louise Fillingim, Mrs. Duffey Wells, Century, Fla.; three brothers, Don Newton, James L. Newton, Pensacola, Fla., and Johnny Newton, Century, Fla.; four grandchildren, Ronald and Randy Newton, Letohatchee; Kenneth Sexton and Sabrina Sexton, both of Montgomery; a number of nieces and nephews.

Charles Newton in Korea. Charles Newton, having finished advanced training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., sailed for Korea on November 19th. Camp Pendleton is the largest Marine Corps training base in the world. Located approximately 90 miles south of Los Angles, Camp Pendleton sprawls across 130,000 acres of all types of terrain. Now the "Gateway to Korea," it is the final training area for nearly all Marines dispatched to the fighting front in th Orient. Charles is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Newton, of Chapman, and his new address is: Pfc. Charles A. Newton, 1188563, 56th Col. 2nd Nov. repl. Bn., c/o Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, Calif.

From the Greenville Advocate, 11 February 1954. Cpl. Chas. Newton Beaten By Jap -- Police are searching for "young Japanese" who murdered girl -- American and Japanese criminal investigators have pursued their search for a "young Japanese" who be at a girl to death and seriously injured her escort, Cpl. Charles Newton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Newton, Chapman. Cpl. Newton, who is a Marine, sailed for overseas duty on November 19, 1952. Having served his hitch in Korea during the police action there, he was sent to Camp Fisher, in Japan, where he was a cook. Kazuke Nahajima and Cpl. Newton were found lying in a pool of blood at the girl's home in Kyoto on Wednesday afternoon, December 23rd. The young Japanese girl died a short time later from what police described as a "beating from a blunt instrument." In a death-bed conversation, she identified her assailant as a "young Japanese." Cpl. Newton suffered head injuries and the loss of a finger. He called his parents from the hospital in Japan a few days after he was hurt to reassure them that he would be all right.

Donnie finished high school in May 1952 and met Robert in November. They were married in April 1953 while Robert was still a cadet and going thru flight training at Pensacola, Florida. Robert completed his duty in Pensacola as a Marine flight instructor. Robert and Donnie moved to Seattle (Bob's home) after their first child arrived. While in Seattle Robert attended the University of Washington and received an BA and an MA degree. They remained in Washington for 11 years then moved to Santta Barbara, California where they remained for 10 years. They moved from Santa Barbara to San Jose, California where Robert joined General Electric and have been there for 16 years (as of January 1994). Donnie is very active in the Lutheran Church. She and Robert are also active in the local Bridge Club and enjoy the beach and working in the yard.

Jodie Newton, 56, of 8644 Kiplin St., died unexpectly late Sunday night in a local hospital. A native of Greenville, Ala., Mr. Newton had resided in Pensacola for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a civil services employe at the Naval Air Station. Survivors inclde his widow, Mrs. Mattie Lou Newton of Pensacola; a daughter, Mrs. Robert D. Davis of Jacksonville; four brothers, James L.ewton and Don Newton both of Pensacola, Elbert H. Newton of Greenville, Alabama and Johnny Ira Newton of Bluff Springs; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Fillingim and Mrs Duffie Wells both of Bluff Springs and Mrs. Lucy Lee Littles of Century, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be a 1 p.m. Wednesday in the McNeil Funeral Home Chapel and at 3 p.m. in the Byrnville Methodist Church, with the Rev. John W. Sowell officiating. Burial will be in the Byrnville Cemetery with McNeil Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers will be Harvey E. Polk, A. C. Willis, T. M. Mabre, Kenneth Stephens, F. A. Clark, and Lee Herrington.
