Purchase of land by William Finklea

Land Office: Montgomery
Document Number: 12867
Total Acres: 74.76
Issue Date: November 21, 1894
Misc. Doc. Nr.: 20532
Act or Treaty: May 20, 1862
Entry Classification: Homestead Entry Original
Legal Land Description:
Aliquot Parts ... W½NW
Base Line ... ST STEPHENS
Township ... 7N
Range ... 16E
Section# ... 36
Description:
The patentee was the first owner of property after the initial survey. Once the patent was issued, the land became private property and was then sold with a deed. The townships, the six-mile-square land blocks which were the original divisions of land from the federal land grants, were then divided into 36 one-mile squares. The township numbering was the north-south numbering, starting from the center line. The range numbering was the east-west numbering, starting from the center line. The section is the one-mile-square portion (approximately 640 acres) of a township. That was also generally divided into 36 equal squares (each of which might be divided another 36 times).

William joined the Confederate Army and spent most of the war away from home. When he returned, his mother and brothers and sisters had moved to Wilcox County, Alabama. However, he returned to Covington County and resided there until his death. Much of the data found on my website about the Confederate Army comes from a very good website about the 42nd CSA, which can be found at the URL given below.
